AB The HIV Legal Project (HELP) was established by a small group of AIDS
activists in 1990 to provide legal assistance to PLWA. The majority of
the board of directors of the Project is HIV+ to ensure community
accountability and relevance. With funding from the provincial Ontario
Legal Aid Plan, the Project has hired a lawyer to work full time within
another legal aid clinic, The Advocacy Resource Centre for the
Handicapped. The Project does test case litigation, education and
advocacy for individuals and for law reform; however, the Project acts
mainly as a referral service for people facing HIV/AIDS discrimination,
in income maintenance, insurance, employment, housing, immigration and
health care. In our first year the Project handled over 300 requests for
help in the following areas: private insurance, 28%; health care 23%;
human rights 23%; family law, criminal law and immigration 17%; and
wills and powers of attorney 9%. We will report on the most recent
activities of the Project: the number and types of calls, the issues
raised, and the Project's response.
